  1. Jobs report was light, but bulls are still buying

    The jobs report on Friday came in with a hefty 261,000 jobs being added in October, but that was quite a bit below analyst expectations and stocks initially moved lower, but that didn't deter the bulls who have been relentless in their effort to buy any and all dips over the last few months. The Dow ended the day up a slight 23-points, or 0.1%, but the broader S&P 500, and particularly the big tech heavy Nasdaq, saw more meaningful gains.

  2. TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

    Stocks were mixed this week with earnings season getting closer to wrapping up and the news coverage of the tax bill keeping investors on their toes. Earnings season added volatility to the end of October after seeing tight upward trading action to the first half of the month. Good earnings reports from big names such as Apple pushed large caps up on Friday to end the week near the highs; similar to what we saw last week.   4. Positive reversal heading into jobs report

    The bears tried to put some pressure on when the market opened on Thursday but pesky dip buyers were right there to put them back in their place again. The Dow gained a healthy 81-points and closed at a new record, but for the most part the late rally took the major indices to about break-even on the day.

  5. Volatility returned... somewhat

    The market showed a little volatility, as we might expect on an FOMC meeting day, but most of the movement came before the policy statement was announced. We saw some larger early gains evaporate by early afternoon, but stocks tried to battle back and closed with mixed results again. The gained 58-points, but that was off the 140-point gain it had near the open.
