It was a very quiet day on Tuesday with a lull in volatility and the major indices nearly flat lining. The small caps and the Transportation Index were the losers with each falling over 1% on the day. Bonds were flat and the dollar was down again.

Stocks were wild, and mixed again on Monday. The Dow (-37-points) and the small caps were down, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were up. But that's just part of the story as the indices plunged in mid-morning trading, only to come roaring back into the close. The Dow was down 570-points at the lows yesterday. So much for opportunities to try to buy a dip because these moves are lasting minutes, not days or weeks, and if you saw the sell-off and tried to act before our IFT deadline, by the close ...

After spending the first hour or so in positive territory, the market took a quick nose dive into negative territory. The selling didn't last long at all and the buyers stepped in and slowly took the market back near or above the neutral line by the close.




You can see the long tails on the candlesticks. Price remains near the top on both charts.

Stocks bounced back last week, after the prior week's selling, but on Friday we saw another weirdly mixed day with a 179-point loss in the Dow, a modest loss in the S&P 500, yet the Nasdaq, and particularly the small caps, were up. The Russell 2000 small caps index was actually up 1.3%, so once again investors may be selling in one area, but they're buying elsewhere.
