    Hey bm,

Had issue with opening hashflare account. seems it is based on multiple checkpoints and information exchanges.

My issue: Used debit card (VISA) and got flagged for fraud. Called bank, worked things out with bank fraud department and VISA. Attempted transaction again, Hashflare passed the transaction and got pending from bank. The transaction " in line item never showed due to "pending" transaction. So, I will be going out there with a credit card (non-debit related) this weekend.

Any interesting tidbits on transactions you have found?

I guess I should have done it last night...

Ugh, maybe they closed the doors again? Everyone is trying to get in right now. Might not have the infrastructure to support it yet. I figured they would have fixed that issue when they closed the doors the first time though.

    Frix,

Sorry, I didn't have any issues with my account or payments. I used a Navy Fed VISA Check Card for the initial purchase, and then have been reinvesting the profits since then so I only used outside money the one time. Hope it goes fine this weekend.

Do you have a certain coin you want to mine? I did the math a few weeks ago and found bitcoin to be the most profitable at the time, but with the recent selloff along with Ethereum going to the moon, I need to redo the numbers and see if maybe that coin would be more profitable. I'll try to figure that out tonight.

I was looking at Ethereum because I can convert it into Ripple fairly easily.

Where can I find a mining for dummies? I have tried 3x on 2 different machines, Windows and Ubuntu... thoughts?

Using your own machine might be cumbersome and inefficient with the requirement of processing power. Have you looked at antmining? Or buying mining cycles that bmneveu has in his signature line?

I have several laying around, I don't pay for electricity, and I'm not really sure whether I care that the machines die. So I would like to try mining on my own to see if it's even worth it.

If you want to mine coins yourself with your own machine, there's basically 3 things you need to do. Get a wallet, download a miner, and find a pool to connect it to. Once you have those 3 things, you get them all sync'd up and run the miner. Use the pool as your dashboard to monitor your progress, and have your mined coins addressed and transferred to your wallet. There are many wallets, and miners, and pools. Figuring out which coin you want to mine will help filter the options down. I used to use guiminer, slushpool and blockchain.info wallet. I quickly found out I wouldn't be making any progress on a laptop, so I quit that and went in another direction. I got into cloud mining with Hashflare and Crypterra, and bought Ripple itself on the Binance exchange. Mining can be profitable if you have a good machine to do it with. Mostly you just need a good GPU and an efficient power supply. There's not a whole lot else that matters on the machine end. Personally I think it's also fun, so I mine a new alt coin with my laptop just because I enjoy it and its early enough in the coin's life that I can get a few on my laptop while I'm at work or sleeping. It's probably costing me more electricity than it's worth right now, but I'm going to hold them for years and hope they become the next big thing. Who knows.

    Hope this helps.

If you don't pay for electricity, it's definitely worth trying. It could be very profitable for you. I know you're tech savvy too so you could even swap in a new GPU to maximize the potential of a machine. I don't really recommend bitcoin as the difficulty is very high now, but it worked well in my case to get my feet wet and help me learn about how everything works.

Today is more proof that the flippening is real. If you are all in on Bitcoin, I highly suggest you diversify with some Ethereum. Personally I switched all my Bitcoin to ETH, I'm in some alt coins for side bets. But ETH is my "home" coin.

    Other coins worth watching:
    LRC
    LEND
    NEBL
    XLM
    ZRX
