close to one-fifth of all cancers in the world are caused by infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria, and other microbes. In developing countries, the number is higher—about one in four—while in industrialized countries, such as the United States, it is about one in 12.
The microbes responsible for most of the global burden of infection-associated cancer are: the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which causes gastric cancer; cancer-causing strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which cause cervical cancer and other cancers; and the hepatitis B and C viruses, which cause liver cancer. These four microbes alone cause more than 15 percent of all cancers worldwide.
H. pylori is believed to induce chronic inflammation, which can lead to atrophic gastritis and, over time, increases the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Helicobacter pylori is the strain of bacteria most widely known for its role in the development of stomach ulcers, but also as a significant risk factor for stomach cancer.

My father was diagnosed with stomach cancer a month ago. He had surgery at that time but it was too far advanced to remove. They just bypassed the stomach. He started chemo treatment this week.

I had never heard of stomach cancer before and have been researching it on the web. I would like to post news articles about it here (unless people object).

McDuck...sorry about your father...and hope the treatments work. I'm glad someone has finally posted something on medical....which will at one time or another for sure. A person can get cancer almost virtually anywhere. My limited knowledge on the subject is that the upper GI series...I think it is....where they put you asleep and run a tube down your stomach and look for growths....then if found, they remove them, send one or so to the lab to see if the growths are cancerous. It's also done from the bottom....anus up...via a semoidosty or colonescopy...spelling....I've had both done and everyone should. My wife also...has done the same. I'm about 60, but had them done in my 50's....people avoid them, but should not. My best to you, your family and father...during these hard times...prayers also.

Hello McDuck,
Stomach cancer is relatively unusual in the US, it's more common in Japan or among people of Japanese ancestry (like me). I'm a little more aware than I like on this subject. The cause is unknown, though salty, pickled and smoked foods (all common in Japanese cooking) may contribute.

It is definately survivable, and can be controlled. Usually when someone in my clan dies of it, there were mitigating circumstances - for instance, my grandfather was 97 (or thereabouts) years old when he was diagnosed, and as usual for him he didn't go to the Dr. until he had already been seriously ill for a couple weeks and had to be dragged by his kids to the emergency room. Others in my family less stubborn than my grandfather went through treatment and lived quite a few years afterward with some restrictions of course but definately able to get around and live a relatively ordinary life.

Duke/Singapore scientists find new way to classify gastric cancer (http://www.scienceblog.com/cms/dukesingapore-scientists-find-new-way-classify-gastric-cancers-25805.html)

The new system classifies gastric cancers by the signaling pathways the tumors use to grow and spread, as opposed to the more traditional approach that describes them by cell type or structure.
"We identified three oncogenic pathways that were activated in over 70 percent of the gastric tumors we examined," said lead author Chia Huey Ooi, PhD, Research Fellow in the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. "We also found that combinations of these pathways are significantly related to patient survival."
Stomach cancer is notoriously resistant to chemotherapy and newer biologic-based therapies have not proven very effective. With current treatments, less than a quarter of patients live longer than five years after surgery
Study authors say the new classification system offers physicians the opportunity to stratify patients according to their tumors' pathway profiles and then apply the treatment that is designed to interrupt the signals those pathways use
They used computational methods to map the activation levels of 11 different cell signaling pathways already known to be active in the development of gastric cancer. They found that three pathways -- primary drivers of cell growth and death (NF-kappaB, Wnt/β-catenin and proliferation/stem cell) were deregulated in most of the tumors. The researchers found that stratifying patients by single pathways did not predict outcomes, but stratifying them by combinations of pathways did.
