Account Numbers

As of August 16, 2007
http://www.tsp.gov/resources/line.gif

Account Numbers Are Coming in October

In October, the Thrift Savings Plan will be introducing a new security feature — account numbers will replace Social Security numbers (SSN) as our primary means of identifying you. You will use your account number — in conjunction with your TSP Web password (http://www.tsp.gov/curinfo/login/password.html) or ThriftLine Personal Identification Number (PIN) — to log into the Account Access section of the TSP Web site or the ThriftLine. You will also be asked to provide your account number on most of the TSP forms.
We will still use your SSN in some situations. For example, when you talk with our Participant Service Representatives, they might still ask you for your SSN to further verify your identity and protect your account information. The TSP will also continue to use your SSN to accept contributions and loan payments from your agency or service and to report disbursements from the TSP to the Internal Revenue Service. However, to the extent that we can, we will not use your SSN.
In August, we will send every participant a letter announcing that account numbers are coming. In September, we will send every participant a unique account number. So look for the blue TSP mailer. In October, the Web site and ThriftLine will be changed to accept only account numbers, not SSNs.
Although we know that moving to account numbers may be inconvenient for some participants, we hope you understand that this is just one more step in ensuring the security of your TSP account.

I got my account number in the mail today. It's a 13 digit number! Yikes!

The envelope looks similar to a Best Buy coupon mailing. Don't throw it away without realizing what it is!

Nothing gets lost IN the mail. Things get lost when they get OUT of the mail! :D

Since they know us by our social security numbers... my guess would be their database is sorted in that order. Just a guess tho.

It doesn't say but I doubt it.

Got mine today. I talked to TSP on Friday and was told that there would be a gradual change over. There will be a time that your SSN willl still be accepted. I am just glad that I did not have to trust that answer.

Those of us in Michigan are having it delivered by Pack Mules I do believe.

If the Mules are pulling Wagons it could take longer.

We can pay extra for one-day mail delivery because of where we live. We can pay but it's guaranteed to make it in two days. I didn't mean to insult anyone that works in the mail or shipping business. I chose to live here and I like the isolation. Our nearest hospital and pharmacy are 90 miles away. Also, it is a four-hour drive to the nearest airport that can handle jets. Again, no problem with mail delivery. HOWEVER, talk to me how half of the post office boxes are rented by people in Mexico!

What I said here was taken way out of Context to say the least.

It was off the wall, and not directed at any delivery service. Wasn't even thinking of it that way when I said it.

Was not intended to hurt any ears around here.

Since I do work for the USPS, and the lack of people we do now have where I am at, and the volume of mail we have here, and the huge size of our routes, it is quite amazing how us carriers do what we do given the short amount of time each day to do it all.

Us carriers are self-motivated, and it is not motivation from our management either. Management and there micro-management way of doing things is not a motivating factor which they think it is. It is useless.

But, I do hope to be home when this does arrive just to see if a Mule with Wagon does show up. LOL

Neither rain, nor snow....

Nah. I won't go there.

Postal folks are some of the hardest working people out there. And I DO appreciate the amazing fact that they can get every single piece of mail addressed to me from point "A" to point "B" in a manner that no one else can begin to duplicate.

Probably a quarter of the cars I see in the parking lot have Mexican plates. One of the relatives brings in a utility bill and then all the other relatives claim that they live at the residence. They're not stupid, the USPS is far superior than any other country's mail delivery service.

George Bush may still get mail in Texas, but there's a reason we supported him for president--it was the only way to get him out of the governor's office and out of the state.

Mine came today- Michigan.

Actually I got two. Civ account and Mil account.

Both the same number.

they could have saved the postage for the second one, and that way saved enough they won't have to start charging for IFT's . (:-)

Naw. On second thought...

I'd rather they spend the postage for two, and keep my USPS brothers employed.

Interesting though, when I got home the Two Mules were sacked out and snoring away in the wagon out in the street.

There was a note attached to the wagon also. They wanted to know if they could spend the night.

I said nope. I told them there is a camper RV park down aways and they can go down yonder and park for the night.

Account Numbers Coming October 9!
http://www.tsp.gov/curinfo/login/accountnumber.html

The TSP has finished sending account numbers to all of our 3.8 million participants. If you haven't already received yours, look for a blue mailer containing this information. All participants should receive their account numbers by the end of the first week of October. (Note: If you joined the TSP after September 7, your account number is included in your "Welcome to the TSP" letter.) This TSP account number will replace your Social Security number (SSN) as our primary means of identifying your account.

The switch to account numbers is scheduled for October 9, 2007. If you want to receive an e-mail when the change is implemented, you can sign up for our automatic e-mail service at "Get E-mail Updates (http://www.tsp.gov/curinfo/emailupdates.html)" and subscribe to receive notifications when new information is added to What's New.
When the TSP Web site and the ThriftLine are changed to accept account numbers, you must use your account number rather than your SSN to log into the Account Access section of the TSP Web site or the Account Menu of the ThriftLine. As usual, you will also need your Web password or ThriftLine Personal Identification Number (PIN). Your password and PIN will not be affected by the switch to account numbers.

Call the thriftline to make trades- I think they will still be using the old data. You can probably request a new account number card through them.

If I were you, I would cll this morning rather than later. I'm sure next week they are going to get flooded with similar calls.

i just called and they will send you another card out with your password but it takes 7-10 days to get it. when calling make sure to prompt the number that states you are on a rotoar phone you get through quicker. to make transaction you have to call the thrift line 1-877-968-3778. you have to know your pin number when calling,if you don't know it you have to get a new one another 7-10 days---- so if you don't know it--- might be to the g-fund until you get your new password

Yes, I just went in.

you have to use the new 13 digit account number.

And I almost forgot my password- I entered it incorrectly the first time.

Dang- it's getting so bad that I figure this is TSP's way of reducing interfund transfers- make it so hard to do that you just throw up your hands, and hope that it's there when you are ready to retire.

Now have to keep a little black notebook with all my passwords (approaching 25 different ones- with different rules...)

Thank you Al Gore for inventing this stuff......

I don't know about you but if I get one more account # or PIN or password that I have to remember I'm going to Monkey!!!!!!!

There are several programs that will encript your passwords on your computer and when you want to go to a site like TSP.gov you just have to enter the master password for all of your sites. AI ROBOFORM is one such program. You can save up to 10 passwords (for 10 sites) for free; above 10 and you have to pay some bucks.

I don't get it. Why should we be concerned if someone from Mexico rents one of your post office boxes? Unless you live close to the border, seems like the people from Mexic0 would have too far to travel to get their mail.
