Yesterday (12/11) I upgraded the board to a new version of the software. One member has reported a problem with pages not displaying; instead seeing a 504 Error page.
Is anyone seeing this, or any other problems today? Thanks.

BTW, when did we start getting ads message pages? Looks like the ads are always the below the first msg on the page.

Yeah, they are popping up all over the place. In the middle of threads, at the bottom of threads and even after the last post...............

I took the ad off of the bottom of each page and added it to the 2nd post of each thread. It seems to be the "cool thing" for message board webmasters lately. I still gotta pay them bills every month. :)

Ah, so I guess it all depends on where a post is on the current page of any particular thread.....................figured that out all on my ownsome.......didn't need no magic or anything.................:D

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm fairly annoyed by the ads today...Rather than additional ads, I'd much rather prefer a yearly fee for this service...

I'm with you Russell, I wasn't gonna say it first though. We do have what, 20 moderators now? As far as I can tell, only one does what they were meant to do. The others attack you for making comments they don't like. Yes, I've been there. :embarrest:
Yearly fee seems about right. It goes with the other stuff going on now. In another year, govt. folks will be right back where we started 3 years ago, looking for guidance without having to pay someone who you don't know........it's all about money. If you can't make it yourself, charge someone else that thinks they know how..........
That's all I have to say about that. :notrust:

I appreciate the feedback. We had discussed it a while back and if I remember correctly only about 10% or 20% of the people felt the same way. If I move to a fee based website, something like 80% of those asked said they'd split.
I am however, learning more about the board's software and there may be a way to take those ads off for those who would prefer to pay a fee. I can look into it if people are interested.

Ads, ads, I like ads. I click them two or three times apiece every time I see one. Sometimes I actually read them and have found some very interesting information on some of them. I make a point of clicking every one every day, always have, lots of fun and if you don't know why???????????? Think about it!

I appreciate the support, but don't get too carried away. Those advertisers have to pay google and me everytime there is a click. I know first hand - you should see my monthly Google ads bill.

So you do or don't want to pay a fee? You confused me.

I use this site by perusing through the new posts every day and gathering information from everyone's posts... I don't just monitor certain threads. Today, whenever I tried to pull up a post, a huge ad block popped up on my screen and I spent alot of time scrolling past the ad to get to the post I was interested in. Since I am a government worker, I don't feel like I can spend that kind of extra time on a daily basis...so I'm afraid if this is a permanent condition, that I won't be able to use the site as much as I would like... For this reason, I'd much rather pay a yearly fee, so that I can continue to benefit from everyone's input. Just voicing my opinion...

Thanks again Russell. Were you logged in when you saw the ad? I know the script does give a bigger ad for those not registered, but the ad in the 2nd post for registered users shouldn't be any bigger than the one at the top of the page. Plus I eliminated the large ad at the bottom of the page.
I am a little surprised by the reaction since it seemed discreet enough to me. I definitely don't want it to be too obtrusive, but just out of curiousity, can you make sure you are logged in and take a look at this page as an example... http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showthread.php?t=3873.
I am not trying to be argumenative, or defensive. I just think maybe we aren't seeing the same thing. I don't see a "huge ad block popping up ... that takes time to scroll past." Certainly nothing that would discourage me or take up any more time, but please let me know what you see.
Again, I apprecaite the the feedback. I will look into the small fee for no ads programming.
Anyone else? Do the ads seem large to you?
Thanks!
Tom

That looked fine Tom...and yes today I saw that the ads were smaller if logged in. I think part of my problem was that I keep the site minimized on my computer all day long and go back and forth to it as my day permits to catch up on posts... I'm not sure what the time limit is, but I get logged off after a certain amount of time, so when I get back on I'm a "guest" user again and then experience the problems. Before this version, that didn't affect my "quick" access to posts, I only needed to make sure I was still logged on to post something myself. So yes, it's an inconvenience to "my way" of using the site, but I understand if I'm in the minority as to willingness to pay a fee...

I must be the odd man out because I have not seen one single pop up ad. I have pop up blocker but have not heard anything out of it.

There should not be any pop ups. Just a small ad between posts 1 and 2 of each thread.

Yes, the non-registered member ads are a bit obnoxious with that added message suggesting you register. I can change that code I believe. I'll try it now.

One more thought on advertisements. I had someone comment to me a while back that the people on this message board were in general an intelligent group and they are probably too smart to click on ads.
I was a little confused by this statement. The advertiser pays all the costs. It is all supervised by Google (in my case) so all ads are approved and clean (no spyware, etc.) You might find something of interest, and it helps to keep a site in business.
I'll bet close to 80% of the people who found TSP Talk did so through a Google or Yahoo link somewhere on the internet. So, if you see an interesting ad on the internet somewhere, don't be afraid to visit the site. If you don't like what you see, just hit the back button. It's all good. :)
Yeah, like I said earlier, it only takes a couple seconds to click on an add.
If your not interested in the ad itself, at least click on them from time to time to help generate income for the site.
God Bless:)

Yeah, I was able to go in and change the code so that small ads appear whether you are logged in or not. I hope that makes scrolling the board a little easier.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I have not been able to pull up Tom's new comments for today. When I logged on to TSPTalk.com and clicked the Market Comments link, I continue to get the January 26 comments. I have tried refreshing which did not change anything. I figured Tom was just a little late in getting his comments up this morning, but I just checked my email and realized I got the Alert "TSP Talk - Busy Week on Tap" which starts off with the first few lines of the January 29 Comments and a link to the comments page. Even following this link brings me right back to the January 26 comments. Am I missing something?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Tom, can you just rehash for me real quick whether the Trader Fred system is in buy or sell mode, and/or any changes you may have made to your account.

Hi Q -
Sounds like a cache issue. First things first - Fred is still on a sell signal.
But try this:
Go to the comments page (http://www.tsptalk.com/comments.html)and then hold down the ctrl-key and at the same time, hit the refresh button on your browser. That will attempt to bypass the system's cache and look for any new updated page.
Let me know. Thanks,
Tom
