If you want to play with numbers and need closing data for the Wilshire 4500 all the way back to its beginning, you can get it this way:

Go to http://www.wilshire.com

near the top of the page click on "indexes"

in the colored area to the right click on "index return calculator"

in the box labeled "Broad/style" select: "DJ Wilshire 4500 (Full Cap) Price"

in the box right under that select "since inception returns"

click the button off to the right (not the one down below) that says: "download csv files"

Prepare to be swamped with a single column of numbers.

I had trouble getting this into a spreadsheet and separating into three separate columns for date, change, and closing value. I finally pasted it into word, used the change text to table feature, then copying the table into excel. If there is a better way to get a comma delimited file into excel and directly separating the columns, let me know

You can also get share data at the DJ Indexes website: http://djindexes.com/mdsidx/downloads/xlspages/wilshire/dwcp_hist.xls

Does anyone know where to get historical earnings data?

"If there is a better way to get a comma delimited file into excel and directly separating the columns, let me know."

Pilgrim: clicking on the csv file should open the file in Excel in tabular format, if it does not, try right-clicking on the file, and use "Open with" Excel. Once the file is open in Excel with rows and columns you can use "Save as" under the Excel Edit menu to save it as a .xls regular spreadsheet file if you want to add formatting.

Good luck.

Where can I find historical data on earnings for the Wilshire 4500? I'm really looking for a chart of the Historical PE ratio.

Well most of the links no longer work, and the Wilshire 4500 (Full Cap) appears to have ceased in 2008, so it looks like it's time to update this thread.

To get to the data download page try going here (http://www.wilshire.com/Indexes/calculator/). If that no longer works try this:

Go to the Wishire home page: www.wilshire.com (http://www.wilshire.com)
Near the top of the page click on "INDEXES"
In the orange colored area to the right click on "Index Calculator"

That should get you there.

Since the Wilshire 4500 (Full Cap) doesn't have any data past mid 2008 Im going to continue these instructions with the Wilshire 4500. It looks like they only differ from 2004 onward. To understand the difference check out this thread: http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/s-fund/3413-dwcp-dwcpf-difference.html#post59976

To get a list of daily or monthly returns since inception try this:

In the menu selector under the "Broad/Style" selection list, change the menu entry from "Cumulative Returns" to "Since Inception Returns".
In the "Broad/Style" selection list select "Wilshire 4500". If you already did this before step 1, you will have to do it again because step 1 blanks existing selections in that list.
In the menu selector under the "Target" selection list, change the menu entry to "Monthly Returns" if you want that instead of the default "Daily Returns".
Press the orange "Download csv files" button. A new tab should pop up containing a comma seperated list of your data.
Select the entire list of data with your mouse and paste it into a text editer like Notepad in Windows.
Save this off with a ".csv" filename extention.
Import this file into your spreadsheet as a CSV file. In Windows you should be able to double click the file icon with your mouse to have Excel automatically open it as a spreadsheet as long as the file has a ".csv" extension.

To get 8-10 years worth of annual returns at a time try this:

In the menu selector under the "Broad/Style" selection list, change the menu entry from "Cumulative Returns" to "Periodic Returns".
In the "Broad/Style" selection list select "Wilshire 4500". If you already did this before step 1, you will have to do it again because step 1 blanks existing selections in that list.
Set the "From" and "To" dates.
In the menu selector under the "From:" date, change the menu entry from "Simple Returns" to "Yearly Returns".
Press the orange "Submit" button. A new tab should pop up containing your requested data.

Thanks Cactus, I was needing to rebuild those stats and your thread came up #2 under a google search for "wilshire 4500 historical data" :)
