Okay folks, check this out: If your in the military ( or a Civil Service as well, I THINK)

Call up your Cell phone provider, and tell them


"I qualify for the Federal Telecommunications act of 1996" and would like you to give me the discount I am entitled"

I tried to 'google' this, and didn't find much, but I did call Cingular Wireless and they gave me a web site to goto... Then I recieved an email stating that I was accepted and within 2 billing cycles it would be active.

my friend called Verizon: they acted like they didnt know... Just simply ask to speak with a supervisor or manager... THEY KNOW ABOUT IT!!!!

Please reply here, if you have done this, cell phone companies of course will never publish that they do this.. 20% is a quite a large amount to discount!!!

If they fail to do this, make sure you get the managers name and employer ID and or extension... And seek higher

So, what are you waitin for??? call yer customer service!!!!!

Correction: The Letter to the Editor that appeared on p. 50 of the June 2005 issue of NARFE magazine is in error. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 does not provide for a cellular phone service discount for current and retired federal employees. NARFE regrets the error.

Different story for the military, but has nothing to do with the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996:

Sprint offers a 15% military discount. Call 1-888-788-4727. No additional contract required.

Cingular offers a 19% military discount. Call 1-800-319-6393. Update: for Cingular's discounts to take effect, you will need to sign up for a 2-year service agreement. With a .mil email address, you can sign up for the discount at their website (https://business.cingular.com/cingular/shop/).

T-Mobile military discount is 22%. Call 1-866-646-4688. No additional contract required.

Nextel offers an 18% military discount. Call 1-800-639-6111. No additional contract required.

Verizon customer service number is 1-800-511-1150 and is open 8am-9pm M-F -- the USAF discount is 23%. If you are with any sister service the military discount is 17%. No additional contract required.
Note: many emails with this information have circulated at many major military installations citing a "Federal Communications Act of 1996, Federal Employees Past and Present" -- this particular act does NOT provide for these cell phone discounts. In other words, this Federal Act has absolutely nothing to do with the current discounts, the military discounts are 100% voluntary on the part of these service providers.

I just called and they say the process takes up to 60 days to verify.

But you get a 15% discount for being civil service.

I got a discount from Tmobile with this. I dont remember the %, but it was enough to discount the tax and fees from my plan.

I just downloaded and printed the form. In the instructions it says fax the completed form to Cingular within 30 days of service activation. I am at least 1 year into my 2 year contract so I guess this means that it might not work for me. How long were any of you into your contract when you submitted the form to Cingular? If over 30 days did it still work?
