At this point I wish I had some money in the G Fund. Furthermore, I wish I was 60/40 stocks/bonds. However, looking at the long term, I think stocks, not bonds, are the place to be. Of course, if the stock market keeps falling, I'll be 60/40 in the very near future.:?
All it takes is a couple of good days and I'll be in positive territory again. In addition, all of my new allocations willhave the advantage of having beenpurchased at relatively bargain prices. Still, it hurts to loose thousands of dollars in one week. :(

August was a miserable month until the last day. I feel guilty about Katrina. Although the hurricane is a terrible disaster for the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, it will generate a lot of economic activity.
I certainly hope the federal government can get its act together soon - especially Homeland Security. Their response so far is embarrassing - not to mention deadly for the poor people impacted by the storm. :(

don't mean to be argumentative or smart alec but am curious. IF you believe in allocation across TSP funds and you need not, L funds are by far the most scientifically and mathematically proven allocation mix based on MPT. What makes your allocation so unique that you are willing to forgo the sweat and tear that went into L fund development? I know only time will tell if you are right. But life is so short and there are so many roses to smell........

Sr,
1. I established this allocation prior to the advent of the L Funds. I'm tracking it on the board to provide a results comparison to the market timing. I'll finish out this year posting once a month. However, since there are now so many passive allocation examples, e.g. Tom's 20% each fund and the L Funds, I may not post next year.
2.My allocation is based on a Markowitz efficient frontier analysis (Visual MVO software) and the exact level of projected risk/return that's right for me. I've taken on more risk with the S Fund to, hopefully, increase my return. In addition, I don't agree with the various L Fund asset allocations.I don't understand how they were arrived at. I'm comfortable with and understand what I'm doing and why.
3. The L Funds favor the G Fund over the F Fund. Right or wrong, my analysis indicates the F Fund, as part of a portfolio, provides a higher return over time.
4. The L Funds are constantlyadjusting the level of risk/return over time.I want to be able to exactly specify my portfolio's projectedrisk/return.
5.Everything I've read recommends quarterly to yearly rebalancing. The L Funds balance daily -probably as an administrative convenience. Frequent rebalancingtends to reduce returns because it precludes taking advantage ofasset class momentum, e.g. the superiority of the C Fund during the 1990s.
6. I'm coordinating my TSP with my wife's 401K as one portfolio. Establishing my own TSP asset allocation makes this easier for me to do.
7.Now established, my allocation iseasy to maintain. My contributions match my target asset allocations. I rebalance once a year and that's it. In fact, I just rebalanced my portfolio this morning. Now, I won'ttouch it for another 12 months.
8. If the L Funds start outperforming my allocation by a significant amount, I may change my mind. I'm open to any approach that increases returns for the same level of risk. :^

Sr,
FYI.
The 2020-2040 Funds beat me this month - too much F Fund on my part. However, I'm still ahead for the year!
Theasset allocation expert,William Bernstein, claims that the key to successful asset allocation is not changing it once it is established. Therefore, if I'm in the ball park, allocation-wise,and hold fast, I should do all right.
