ps: basing my decision on low volume, oil/gas prices, chart data, short interest, insider selling,lack of air traffic at work(amount of flow control such as daily restrictions to atl lifted), friends and familyin the business world, and a simplegut feel that things look sour.

happy with my financial position and too close to retirement to fight the long plays with rising rates. may jump back in if a major drop occurs.

thoughts of a pro trader on another board:

In the morning, the Qs were near 35.1, and the 35.0 puts had a .05 premium. The volume on these puts were increasing tremendously. Total complacency on the part of the bulls. Even when it had hit 35.05, the premium had only increased to .15.

I was watching this and my initial thoughts were: Only idiots will buy puts at this stage because they'll hold the line at 35.

Then suddenly the volume kept increasing to huge amounts on that put and fear struck me. Those bastages were buying the puts since they knew a push below 35 would cause a cascade down far below it. The risk was nothing compared to the gain.

This was exactly what happened at the 36 break line. There were so many puts at so little premium Da Boyz knew exactly what they were doing by pushing this down. IBM and AAPL's earnings were just what they needed to get the momentum going.

Now IMHO, this market has had a mini crash. This was a well engineered down pour with panic helping it down. There's only two outcomes out of this:

1. We are on the verge of a real crash (400 points or more) next few days (low probability).

2. We are on the verge of the next huge leg up (higher probability).

Fact is, economic conditions are still highly favorable. That is why the interest rates and commodities prices are rising. Remember that real danger to the market is deflation, not inflation.

The only caveat to this is that this inflation may not be a reflection of true supply shortages vs demand but rather a very strong devaluation of the dollar. However, commodities prices have outstriped the dollar's decline, and the dollar appears to be getting stronger, not weaker.

Its not going to be easy to be bullish with a run down like this. In fact its outright scary, since the declines were so rapid in nature. Many mutual funds, by their usual safety rules, will be forced to reduce their exposure to stocks and head to bonds. This was evident yesterday, and they will likely continue this for next few days since they're a mack truck and can't turn on a dime.

Hedge funds, on the other hand, who I imagine caused this decline, will now buy into the inventory coming into the market while they cover their shorts in a massive way. If I am analyzing properly, bond yields will continue to drop while a huge leg up rally starts. The leg up will be so large that it will cause the mutual funds once again to turn their heads and realize their mistake. This should cause prices to increase even higher while the hedge funds all smile at a job well done.

However, the danger of continued decline is still there, and a prudent investor must stick to his stop loss if he's going long at this juncture, or hedge his bets. Buying may 33 puts when the premium goes down to say .15 is good insurance for the short term, since the real danger is short term, not IT.

MT knew what wasgoing downbecause he was a part of it - convince me otherwise if I am wrong. It was difficult to find anything else in his postings because of the irrelvant, irrational comments throughout each one.

my guess was an ex-govt. employee working on wall street...more or less a working stiff who was well versed in traders lingo and habits.:^
